The New Jersey was one of the largest warships in the world. Belonging to the Iowa-class the ship had an ideal combination of fire-power and high speed and was for a long time a much feared opponent. Construction of the New Jersey began 1940. She was commissioned was in January 1944. Thereafter she took part in operations during the Second World War, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, off the coast of Lebanon at the end of 1983/1984 and ultimately in the Persian Gulf in late 1989. During her last overhaul and modernisation programme (1982), she received the latest electronics and guided weapons systems. Tomahawk Cruise Missiles and Harpoon Guided Missiles were added to the large 40.6 cm (16 inch) guns for even more fire power. Instead of on-board aircraft from the World War II the battleships now carried the modern Sea Hawk helicopter.
