The P-61 was the heaviest and most advanced night fighter of its time and had a huge weapons arsenal at its disposal. It was the first American fighter aircraft specifically designed for night combat operations and on the basis of its black paint scheme received the nickname Black Widow . The initial production P-61A had a fully rotating gun turret behind the cockpit fitted with four point 50 calibre machine guns. Four 20 mm cannon were housed in pods under the belly. Its top speed was nearly 600 km/h (370 mph) Due not least to its late appearance on the battlefield, the P-61's main area of operation was the Pacific. It also achieved considerable success however in European Theatres of War during the final months.
